AP Macro Unit 4 Overview

What needs to be taught in Unit 4?

Here’s the order of topics according to the College Board AP Macroeconomics Course and Exam Description:

  • 4.1 Financial Assets
  • 4.2 Real v. Nominal Interest Rates
  • 4.3 Definition, Measurement, and Function of Money
  • 4.4 Banking and the Expansion of the Money Supply
  • 4.5 The Money Market
  • 4.6 Monetary Policy
  • 4.7 The Loanable Funds Market

Ordering of topics for AP Macro Unit 4

For the most part, I agree with the order in the CED.  I teach 4.1 and 4.3 together.  4.2 is a real quick lesson, and I’m not sure if there is a better place for it so I teach it right after 4.3.  Section 4.4 has enough content to teach on its own, especially since the concept of expanding the money supply is so important.  If you are squeezed for time, it’s possible to do 4.5, 4.6, and 4.7 in two class periods.  Just make sure the students get enough graphing practice:  Money Market –> Investment –> AD-AS.
